Debunking Opioid Myths: Leading a Comprehensive Educational Campaign for Healthcare Professionals & Consumers Ahead of Narcan’s OTC Release

When Narcan® Naloxone, the life-saving opioid overdose reversal drug, became available over-the-counter, the importance of educating healthcare professionals (HCPs) about its use and value became paramount. As the lead content strategist, I spearheaded content for a dedicated website for healthcare professionals, designed to equip them with the knowledge, tools, and resources necessary to inform and guide their patients on opioid emergency preparedness and Narcan's role in saving lives.

The Ask

Healthcare professionals are on the front lines of the opioid epidemic, and they play a pivotal role in educating patients about overdose prevention. However, there is often a stigma surrounding opioid emergencies and the use of naloxone (Narcan), with many misconceptions about who needs it.

Our challenge was to create a content strategy that not only educated HCPs but also empowered them to have meaningful conversations with their patients, combatting stigma and equipping them to act in emergency situations.

My Role

  • Develop content pillars and messaging that aligned with the business goals.

This pillar focused on ensuring healthcare professionals were fully informed about Narcan, how it works, and its vital role in reversing opioid overdoses. We wanted to make sure HCPs were aware that Narcan was now available over the counter, increasing accessibility for those in need. We provided detailed product information, including how to administer it, dosages, and answers to common questions they might encounter from patients.

  • We wanted to empower healthcare professionals to break through the stigma surrounding naloxone. A common misconception is that Narcan is only for individuals struggling with addiction, but the truth is, opioid emergencies can happen to anyone, including those prescribed opioids for pain management. Through content that provided clear messaging, evidence-based statistics, and patient stories, we aimed to give HCPs the confidence and tools to discuss opioid preparedness with any patient, regardless of their background.

  • The ultimate goal of the website was to help HCPs understand that by educating patients about Narcan, they can potentially save lives. We created content that emphasized how accessible and easy Narcan is to administer, encouraging healthcare professionals to educate patients and families on its use in emergencies. The resources we developed were crafted to support HCPs in their patient conversations, including step-by-step instructions, FAQs, and critical talking points for reducing fear and misinformation.

The Results

Webpage of narcan.com/healthcare-professionals

By building a comprehensive, resource-rich platform for healthcare professionals, we were able to provide them with the tools needed to save lives in opioid emergencies and break the stigma surrounding the use of naloxone. Collaborating across creative, development, brand, and medical teams, we successfully translated Narcan’s umbrella messaging into a targeted, effective resource for the healthcare community.
